Nail it
“Nails thicken as we age,” says Kailee Kline, founder of Healthwinds, The Health and Wellness Spa in Toronto, “so it’s important to cut them properly so you don’t accidentally give yourself ingrown nails.” Trim straight across. “If you make the sides too round, they’ll grow into the skin,” says Kline. Ingrown nails also occur when nails are cut too short. Leaving a little white rim on each nail, like in a French pedicure, works.
Heeling power
Warm weather can make cracked heels worse. “You’d expect feet to be more moist,” says Kline, “but they sweat a lot, so you tend to get a lot of dry skin.” To renew softness, try this overnight treatment. First, give heels a scrub to remove dry, dead skin. You can use a salt or sugar-based product, a pumice stone or a foot file. Whichever one you choose, be gentle. “It’s important to not do too good a job,” says Kline. “That skin has formed to protect the foot, so if you take too much of it away you’re going to have pain,” she says. Once you’ve lightly buffed both heels, massage in a rich cream (look for intensely moisturizing ingredients like avocado oil or shea butter), slip on light cotton socks, head off to bed and wake up with surprisingly smooth heels. It’s best to start the treatment when you’ve just finished a bath or shower and skin is damp. The dead skin will come off easily and the therapeutic benefits of the cream will be locked in.
If feet and ankles are plagued by puffiness, Kline likes to refresh them using a cooling foot mask with menthol. “It’s great for taking the swelling down,” she says.
Colour your world
Gothic black-based hues, neon brights and pale pastels have been popular nail colours but are there age limits when it comes to sporting the hottest shade? “I don't think nail lacquer choice is determined by age, but rather by personality and preference,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive VP and artistic director of OPI. “Sometimes even an occasion or an outfit may determine the colour, but age shouldn't be a deterrent to choosing the shade you want,” she says.
Her picks for women 50-plus and fabulous are:
-I Think in Pink (below, left) from the Pink by OPI SoftShades collection. “Nothing says 'pretty' and 'romantic' the way pink does and every woman can wear this shade.”
-For dark, sophisticated tones, try We'll Always Have Paris (below, middle) or Here Today. Aragon Tomorrow, a deep forest green. “These are fashion-forward and elegant, and they dress up any outfit.”
-If you love brights, give Hot & Spicy (below, right) from The Hong Kong Collection a try. “This sizzling coral is very hot right now,” says Weiss-Fischmann. “It will update any look and keep you on trend without having to buy a new wardrobe.”
