Running shoes? Check! Workout pants fashioned out of the latest wicking fabric to keep you dry? Check! Sports bra? Check! A makeup bag full of the best post-workout skin care, hair care and cosmetics? Didn’t think so! After an hour of sweating, working your muscles and your mind, make sure you have the best in beauty to keep your body looking as good as you’re feeling.
BODY
There are few things that feel as amazing as a long hot shower after hitting the treadmill. The hot water works to relax your muscles and open your pores to get out any of the dirt that comes from releasing toxins as you perspire. But, what that hot water also does is dry out your skin. Make sure to choose a body wash that moisturizes as well as cleanses, and follow up with a light moisturizer that still lets your skin breathe while it’s cooling down.
The Giovanni Organic Cosmetics D:tox System is designed to hydrate, purify and replenish skin. With the additional step of a purifying body scrub (which really cleanses and sloughs off dead skin), together with the purifying body wash and hydrating body lotion, you’re skin will thank you. The wash and scrub use activated charcoal and volcanic ash to absorb debris and the lotion is infused with acai and goji berry to replenish skin’s vitamins and minerals.
HAIR
Your skin isn’t the only thing that gets dirty from a good workout. Your hair and scalp also need some TLC once you’ve hit the showers. Sweat is great for getting the toxins out, but it also can dehydrate and lead to an itchy, often flaky scalp. Use a lightweight or daily use shampoo to help cleanse your locks and leave them ready for styling. Try Dr. Hauschka’s Macadamia and Orange Shampoo. Great for normal hair, wash using tepid, rather than hot, water, to gently cleanse your hair and leave it soft and manageable after the gym.
If you don’t have time to shower, it’s still important to treat your locks right away. Try a hair tonic with an essential oil like peppermint or tea tree oil as both have astringent properties. Dampen hair slightly and use something like Bumble and Bumble Tonic lotion. With vitamins and tea tree oil, it replaces lost moisture and leaves your hair ready for anything.
FACE
Even before you’re trainer begins “Project Punish”, it’s important to remove any excess makeup and dirt from your pores. This will allow them to release toxins without clogging. Use a facial cleaning wipe, which is handy and quick. Our favourite? Olay Daily Facials Express Cleaning Cloths. Designed to remove makeup and dirt from skin, the dermatologist-tested and vitamin E infused cloths are a great way to begin your hour of power.
